What is BESS FAT?

Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) is a critical milestone in Symtech Solar’s procurement and deployment process for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).  Conducted at our contract manufacturer’s facility prior to shipment, FAT ensures that every system has been built to Symtech Solar’s specifications, operates as intended, and meets all contractual, safety, and performance requirements before it leaves the factory floor.

The primary goal of FAT is to identify and resolve any deficiencies early in the process before the system is delivered to site.  This reduces costly rework, minimizes project delays, and provides confidence to all stakeholders that the BESS is ready for installation and commissioning.  FAT serves as a formal verification checkpoint between Symtech Solar, our contract manufacturer, and the customer.

What FAT Typically Covers

  • Documentation Review:  Verification of design drawings, wiring diagrams, Bills of Materials (BOM), and compliance certifications against Symtech Solar’s project requirements.
  • Visual and Mechanical Inspection:  Physical inspection of components, enclosures, cabling, labeling, and build quality to confirm adherence to Symtech Solar’s standards.
  • Functional Testing:  Verification that all systems operate correctly, including power conversion, battery management systems (BMS), thermal management, and control systems.
  • Protection and Safety Testing:  Validation of overcurrent protection, fault detection, emergency shutdown, and grounding integrity.
  • Communications Testing:  Confirmation that SCADA, EMS, and remote monitoring interfaces communicate as specified in the project design.
  • Performance Verification:  Testing charge/discharge cycles, round-trip efficiency, and response times against Symtech Solar’s design specifications.

Why Factory Acceptance (FAT)
Testing Matters

Skipping or shortcutting FAT introduces significant risk.  Issues discovered after delivery are far more expensive and time-consuming to resolve, particularly when systems are installed in remote or complex environments.  A thorough FAT process protects the project timeline, reduces warranty claims, and reinforces Symtech Solar’s commitment to delivering reliable, high-quality energy storage solutions to our clients.

Symtech Solar’s Approach

Even when working with contract manufacturers, Symtech Solar maintains full ownership of the FAT process.  Our team develops detailed FAT procedures tailored to each project’s unique specifications and witnesses every stage of testing firsthand.  We ensure that all findings are documented, tracked, and resolved before sign-off so that when a BESS arrives on site, it is ready to perform from day one.

In addition to our standard FAT process, Symtech Solar offers a range of FAT-specific add-ons for customers who require an elevated level of assurance.  These optional services can be tailored to the needs of the project and may include customer witness testing, where the client’s own technical representatives are invited to observe and participate in the FAT process firsthand.

We can also provide enhanced documentation packages, including detailed photographic records, signed test reports, and full traceability documentation for every major component.  For projects with stringent regulatory or financing requirements, we offer third-party witness testing coordination, where an independent inspector is engaged to validate and certify the FAT results.

Customers may also opt for extended performance testing, which goes beyond standard verification to stress-test the system under a wider range of operating conditions.  These add-ons give our clients greater visibility, confidence, and documentation support, reinforcing Symtech Solar’s commitment to transparency and quality at every stage of the project lifecycle.

FAT Checklist / Test Procedure Overview

Symtech Solar’s FAT process follows a structured, step-by-step test procedure designed to leave nothing to chance.  Each procedure is developed prior to the FAT event and reviewed by both Symtech Solar and the contract manufacturer to ensure full alignment before testing begins.  Our FAT checklist can include the following stages:
  • Pre-Test Documentation Review: Confirmation that all engineering documents, certifications, and compliance records are current, complete, and consistent with the project’s design package.
  • Physical and Mechanical Inspection:  A thorough walkthrough of the assembled system to verify component placement, cable routing, labeling, torque verification, and overall workmanship quality.
  • Insulation and Continuity Testing: Verification of electrical insulation resistance and circuit continuity across all major connections to confirm safe and proper wiring.
  • Control System and BMS Verification:  Functional checks of the Battery Management System, including cell balancing, state of charge accuracy, fault detection, and alarm thresholds.
  • Protection Device Testing:  Verification that all protective relays, fuses, breakers, and emergency stop functions operate correctly under simulated fault conditions.
  • Charge and Discharge Cycle Testing:  Controlled testing of the system through full or partial charge and discharge cycles to confirm energy capacity, efficiency, and thermal behavior.
  • Communications and Integration Testing:  Validation of all data interfaces including SCADA, EMS, Modbus, CAN bus, and any customer-specified remote monitoring platforms.
  • Final Inspection and Sign-Off:  A comprehensive review of all test results, punch list items, and outstanding actions before the FAT completion certificate is issued
