MEGATRON Large-Scale BESS
3.125MW × 12.5MWh Integrated BESS + PCS Block

The MEGATRON 3.125MW × 12.5MWh MV block is a fully integrated, factory pre-assembled large-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) built for utility, IPP, and grid-serving applications. Each block pairs two 6.25MWh liquid-cooled LFP battery containers with a single 3.125MW medium-voltage PCS skid — combining battery, power conversion, step-up transformer, and switchgear into one pre-tested, plug-and-play unit. This architecture compresses construction timelines, reduces on-site labor and off-loading costs, and delivers a repeatable building block for multi-MW / multi-MWh project designs.

Each container houses a 4×1P416S arrangement of 1175Ah prismatic LFP cells, engineered for ≥11,000 cycles at the cell level. A dedicated liquid cooling loop maintains tight cell-to-cell temperature uniformity, which is what allows the system to sustain 0.25P charge/discharge with ≥95% round-trip efficiency across a -30°C to +55°C ambient range without heavy derating. Safety is layered through a flame-retardant module top cover, multi-stage active fire detection and suppression compliant with NFPA 855, and a 3-level BMS handling cell-, module-, and system-level monitoring and protection. Delivered with a nominal 27% state of charge, each container is factory-tested and pre-configured before shipment, cutting on-site commissioning time and reducing the risk of field integration issues on large multi-block deployments. The IP55-rated enclosure and IP67-rated modules support unsheltered outdoor installation across a wide range of climates, from arid high-altitude sites to humid coastal environments.

MV Skid — 33kV Integrated Medium Voltage PCS

The MV skid is a pre-assembled, factory-tested 3.5MVA-rated power block (configurable down to 2–3.15MVA) combining a bidirectional PCS (2 × 1750kVA nominal units), an oil-immersed step-up transformer (Dy11 vector, ONAN cooling), and ring main unit switchgear (SF6 or SF6-free options, 36kV rated, 630A, 20–25kA short-circuit rating) in a single 20ft enclosure.

The PCS uses three-level topology to deliver ≥98.5% conversion efficiency with <3% total harmonic distortion, operating across a wide 1050–1500V DC input range with a 690V nominal LV side. On the AC side, the skid steps output to 6.6–33kV ±5% at 50/60Hz, with full four-quadrant reactive power capability, LV/HVRT and LV/HFRT ride-through, grid-forming control, and black start support — positioning MEGATRON as a genuine grid-asset, not just a passive storage block.

Engineering Overview

MEGATRON’s core design principle is minimizing Levelized Cost of Storage (LCOS) through high energy throughput and low auxiliary consumption. The liquid-cooled battery containers hold cell temperature uniformity tight enough to sustain rated 0.25P charge/discharge across a -30°C to +55°C operating window, while the MV skid’s three-level PCS topology pushes conversion efficiency to 98.5% with under 3% THD — both factors that compound directly into higher lifetime energy delivered per dollar invested.

On the protection side, the DC bus is guarded by disconnector-plus-fuse protection inside each inverter, Type II (or I+II) surge arresters on both DC and AC sides, and DC/AC insulation monitoring devices (IMD) for ground fault detection. The transformer carries its own relay protection for pressure, temperature, and gassing, and a dry-contact smoke detector ties into the fire extinguishing system. Communication runs over CAN, RS485, RJ45, and optical fiber, supporting Modbus, IEC 60870-103, and IEC 61850 protocols — covering the interoperability requirements of most utility SCADA and substation automation environments.

Because the MV skid supports grid-forming operation with black start capability, a MEGATRON block can establish its own voltage and frequency reference in an islanded microgrid — not just follow a grid signal — while still delivering full four-quadrant reactive power support, LV/HVRT and LV/HFRT ride-through, and configurable power factor control when connected to the utility grid.

Applications

Energy Shifting
Charges off-peak and discharges during peak demand or high price periods to capture arbitrage value.
Frequency Regulation
Fast active power response via the bidirectional PCS supports grid frequency stabilization.
Grid Forming & Black Start
Establishes voltage and frequency reference in islanded mode and restores power without external grid supply.
Renewable Firming & Smoothing
Absorbs excess solar or wind output during high generation and releases it during low output to reduce intermittency.
Reactive Power & Voltage Support
Four-quadrant reactive power, LV/HVRT, LV/HFRT ride-through, and power factor control for grid stability.
Ramp Rate Control
Limits rapid power swings from variable renewables to keep grid ramps smooth and interconnection-compliant.

System Layout

The MEGATRON MV Power Block’s system layout follows a single-line architecture designed for fast, repeatable utility-scale deployment. Power flows from two 6.25MWh LiFePO4 battery containers (20′ each, 1P416S configuration) through dual bidirectional PCS units rated 3,125kW combined, each carrying up to 1,588A max AC current at ≥98.5% conversion efficiency and under 3% total harmonic distortion. DC power cabling links each container to its paired PCS, while 1,588A-rated MCCBs on the AC side protect the step-up path to a single 690V/33kV, 3,125kVA transformer. From there, a 33kV/630A ring main unit (RMU) ties the block into the medium-voltage grid or substation bus.

This RMU–transformer–PCS topology reflects standard medium-voltage BESS interconnection design practice for utility-scale storage, where centralizing step-up and switching at the block level simplifies paralleling multiple blocks into larger arrays. The system’s <3% THD and >0.99 power factor range keep harmonic performance within typical IEEE 519 limits for grid-connected power conversion equipment, while the IP54-rated enclosure and 48,000kg per-container weight reflect a design built for outdoor, containerized utility sites rather than indoor installation — consistent with siting guidance in NFPA 855 for stationary energy storage systems.
